Animals of the Reserve: Mustela nivalis

La Donnola 
 La Donnola è il più piccolo carnivoro vivente in Europa; ha una struttura snella ed arcuata, gli arti brevi e il capo corto e appuntito. Occupa biotopi abbastanza diversi tra loro, da ambienti aperti semidesertici a foreste ed aree montane. In aree agricole i principali luoghi di rifugio e di riparo sono costituiti da siepi ampie e mature e da muretti a secco. Predatori: le volpi, i rapaci, serpenti.

Weasel
The weasel is the  smallest European carnivore - eats mice, voles, sometimes hunts rabbits.  The least weasel has a thin, greatly elongated and extremely flexible body with a small, yet elongated, blunt-muzzled head which is no thicker than the neck. The eyes are large, bulging and dark coloured. The legs and tail are relatively short. Predators: foxes and birds of prey,  snakes.

 Il cuculo è lungo circa 32–35 cm e ha un'apertura alare di 55–60 cm. L’adulto è grigio, sotto più chiaro con nette bande, più bianco sotto la coda. Coda scura con macchie bianche.  Prende il suo nome dal suo verso caratteristico. Il cuculo è noto per la sua peculiare caratteristica del parassitismo di cova. La femmina depone un solo uovo all'interno del nido di altri uccelli. Alla schiusa, il piccolo del cuculo, con l'aiuto del dorso, si sbarazza delle altre uova presenti nel nido e non ancora schiuse, presentandosi quindi nel nido come l'unico ospite.

Common Cuckoo
The Common Cuckoo is 32–35 cm long and a wingspan of 55–60 cm. It is greyish with a slender body and long tail and can be mistaken for a falcon in flight. It gets its name from its characteristic call. The Common Cuckoo is a brood parasite; it lays its eggs in the nests of other birds. At the appropriate moment, the hen cuckoo flies down to the host's nest, pushes one egg out of the nest, lays an egg and flies off. The whole process takes about 10 seconds. A female may visit up to 50 nests during a breeding season. When the chick is born, it pushes the other eggs or chicks out of the nest.

Sabato 26 aprile il centro visite della Riserva Cornate e Fosini ha aperto le sue porte al
 pubblico con una nuova mostra accativante per gli appassionati della fauna, in particolare dell'avifauna, delle animali trovate nell'Aree Protette nella Provincia di Grosseto. Nei giorni seguenti, questo sito Vi presenterà le specie attualmente presenti in forma imbalsamata all'interno del centro visite e Vi invitiamo di venire di persona ad avvicinarsi per conoscere meglio queste creature e le loro caratteristiche particolari.

Exhibit: Animals of the Protected Areas

Saturday April 26th, the visitor centre of the Nature Reserve Cornate e Fosini opened its doors to the public with a new captivating exhibit for wildlife enthusiasts, especially bird-watchers, that displays the animals found within the protected areas of the province of Grosseto. In these next days, this blog will present the various specimens that can be found on display in the visitor centre and we invite you to come in person to get up close to these interesting creatures and learn more about their particular characteristics.
